A throwback menu will be available all month long at Iron Rose featuring historically inspired dishes that pay homage to the original dining menu of the hotel in the 1800s. A special Jerry Thomas-inspired (a well-known bartender at the time) cocktail menu will be offered as well. This August, 2023 marks the 170th anniversary of The Mills House Hotel, a historic destination in Charleston, South Carolina. On our visit to the Holy City, I used Charleston’s beloved “Pink Hotel” as my luxurious base during a two-night getaway.
What type of room can I book at Mills House Charleston, Curio Collection by Hilton?
Along with the updated guest rooms and rooftop pool, The Mills House debuted two new dining concepts, Iron Rose and The Black Door Café. In the lobby, the all-day café features coffee, pastries, salads, sandwiches, and other grab-and-go bites. Designed by architect John Earl, The Mills House Hotel was opened in 1853 by grain merchant Otis Mills. Against all odds, the historic building survived the widespread destruction in Charleston during the Civil War, but was eventually sold for auction in 1968. Finding the structure unsalvageable, the new owners demolished the property and built a new hotel with a facade based on the original. They also increased the hotel from five to seven stories.

A damage deposit of USD 400 is required on arrival. I love the staff and how attentive they were to the smallest details. Located in the center of the French Quarter in downtown Charleston, The Mills House Hotel is in the perfect spot to explore the city on foot. One morning, we took a historic Lowcountry Walking Tour led by our bubbly and very knowledgeable guide, Kay.

Make sure to start with the cheese of the day with lavash and seasonal jam. We also shared a pizza and pasta including the stand-out of the evening — Ricotta Gnocchi. Served with short rib ragu, horseradish, and pine nut gremolata, we couldn’t get enough of the warm, pillowy bites. We ordered The Cheeky Monkey pizza as well — as it was a simple guanciale (pork cheek), tomato, and chili flake creation with just the right amount of spice. For dessert, you have to go downstairs to the restaurant’s desserts shop, Beardcat’s Sweet Shop, for a scoop of olive oil sea salt, or pistachio gelato.
Explore Modern Charleston
The Mills House Hotel has perhaps one of the most interesting histories for a hotel establishment in downtown Charleston. During the Civil war the hotel was taken over and served as the field headquarters for General Robert E. Lee. The hotel survived the Civil War and on separate occasions, in the late 1800's survived fire, hurricane and earthquake as well.

1852 – Mills commissions architect John Earle to reconstruct and revise the property to create a hotel that he could be proud to have bear the Mills name. Two stories were added and it becomes the first structure in Charleston to have both running water and steam heat. There's still time to send flowers to Dorothy Millhouse's service. It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved Dorothy Millhouse (Los Angeles, California), who passed away at the age of 89, on April 29, 2024. Family and friends can send flowers and/or light a candle as a loving gesture for their loved one.
In December 2022, The Mill House became part of the Curio Collection brand by Hilton. We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests. In this beloved landmark in historic downtown Charleston, you’ll find rooms with warmth and style. Made for resting and recharging, connecting with others, or just having loads of fun. A beautiful hotel, centrally located to many attractions. The only complaint was the noise of people in the hallways. We called the front desk and they were very nice and came up to our floor.
The hotel is beautiful, staff is very polite, helpful, and happy, and the location is phenomenal. Get more of Dallas’ top restaurant, real estate, society, fashion and art in your news feed. Don’t miss the pop-up art exhibit in the hotel lobby curated by nearby The Gibbes Museum.
Grand, historic, stylish—and very pink—Mills House is where Southern traditions with passion and soul meet fun and delight in every moment. With the renovations, The Mills House transitions to Curio Collection by Hilton as the portfolio’s first hotel in South Carolina. With more than a century of providing some of the finest hospitality in Charleston, we go out of our way to care for our guests. This is a place to rest and recharge, connect with others, get some work done, or just have loads of fun.
One of our favorite dishes during lunch was the Chile Rilleno (pictured above). We couldn’t get enough of the roasted poblano stuffed with carnitas. Paired with a pink cactus (prickly pear) house margarita, it was the perfect midday meal. On another evening, we had to try one of the most popular restaurants on Sullivan’s Island. From the owner of Wild Olive (on Johns Island), the sister restaurant serves a Southern, seasonal menu of seafood, pizza, and housemade pasta.
A second favorite lunch spot on our trip, Felix is a French restaurant on King Street. Since 2017, the Paris-inspired spot has been serving one of the best espresso martinis in Charleston, sandwiches, soups, and salads. We started with the can’t-miss lobster deviled eggs and fried Brussels sprouts. The Raclette Burger is one of the best burgers you’ll ever try with double short rib-brisket blended patties, caramelized onion, Raclette, and dijonnaise. The Mills House Hotel has unique meeting space available in the form of the Hibernia club building which is right next door, so close in proximity in fact, it might be mistaken as one of the additions to the hotel. This open spaced Hibernia building can service up to 225 people with catering through the Mills House Hotel.
Professor Jerry Thomas, widely considered the father of the modern cocktail (the creator of the first “fire” show cocktail and the Tom Collins!), was a bartender at The Mills House’s Best Friends Lounge. Please note the restaurant and bar are closed until further notice and no room service is available at this time. Guests can purchase grab-and-go options at G level.
This is a regally appointed older hotel but the age does not hinder the amenities. The preserved charm and period flair serves as a point of interest and the many artful accents and antiques are pieces of history. The Mill House Hotel has 214 non-smoking rooms, each offering guests a truly full service stay. Now with 7 floors, the hotel offers 15 petite suites and 19 full suites, with 1-3 bedrooms, each with a king bed, a sitting area, wet bar and refrigerator. A desk, bedding package, WiFi and turndown service is standard service in all rooms, which are all well maintained in a tasteful pallete offering a pleasing and luxurious environment for every guest.
I will stay there again but at the end of a hall. Location was very good in terms of access to main streets. Let your trip unfold like a page in a novel or a scene from a movie. But make no mistake, this is no old-fashioned city stuck in the past. Step through French doors out to a balcony and sip your morning coffee overlooking Meeting and Queen Street to the sound of horse-drawn carriages clopping by. Savings in your pocket so you can explore more of Charleston.
